As current WSCA Health Communication Interest Group Chair, I wanted to extend my congratulations to our top paper winners at this year’s conference in Denver, CO.

WSCA 2020 | Health Communication Interest Group Top Papers:

We were very lucky to have such meaningful and high-quality scholarship presented at our conference this year. I would also like to remind scholars that our theme for next year’s WSCA is Cultivate and will be held in Irvine, CA from February 12th through the 15th. Our formal call for papers will be send out in early April via WSCA News, at westcomm.org, but it is never too early to start brainstorming submission ideas. As a reminder, WSCA is great intellectual incubator for undergraduate and graduate student submissions. At our business meeting this year we created a new “Debut Paper Award” for our interest group that awards author(s) of a paper who have not presented at a state, regional, national or international convention, or published in an academic journal. We would like to encourage first-time attendees, often graduate and undergraduate students, to submit to our interest group.

We also promote interdisciplinary scholarship by hosting joint interest group panels with other disciplines represented across WSCA.
Finally, we are always in need of reviewers, respondents, and panel chairs. Please keep these service opportunities in mind if you plan on attending WSCA 2021. We appreciate your continued support of WSCA and the Health Communication Interest Group.

2020 Interpersonal Communication Interest Group News

The Interpersonal Communication Interest Group (ICIG) is looking forward to what promises to be an extraordinary and important year for the interest group. In addition to embracing this year’s conference theme of “Cultivate” (more on that in a moment…), we are considering a name change and considering new awards for the interest group. Don’t worry too much about the name change or if there will be a marked space for interpersonal communication at WSCA. We definitely want to keep the “Interpersonal” part of our title. Yet, at the same time, we wonder if there are ways to expand what scholarship can be included as part of the interest group. To that end, we are considering the inclusion of “family” and/or “relational” in our name – two areas of communication that could (and often do) focus on interpersonal communication but that are explored in other areas of the field (e.g., studies of media representations of families; research about workplace relationships). Whether you like or love the idea, hold tight! No change will come until we survey our members and have another round of discussion at CSCA 2021.

Also to be the focus of a poll and future discussion: Should we expand our awards program? Our interest group has some phenomenal scholarship, and we suspect there are more ways to call attention to it than the two top paper awards allow. If you have ideas for potential award categories, let us know!

And finally: As you can probably tell by our considering a name change and looking at our awards program, we are truly excited to “Cultivate” a larger interest in the world of interpersonal communication and to create an interest group that is diverse, inclusive, and that recognizes its members. To get that started, and in consideration of the conference theme, we have a special spotlight panel that will be programmed for 2021 that asks the question, “Why did you leave interpersonal communication?” I hope that has you intrigued – because that is all you are getting for now.

Stay tuned for more details about this spotlight panel and about what the interest group has planned for WSCA 2021 and beyond!

Western Forensics and Argumentation Association (WFAA) Expands Call to Include Performances and Position Papers

For the 2021 conference in Irvine, the WFAA interest group is expanding its call with an eye toward both more collaboration with, and participation by, the vast community of two-year institutions in Southern California and to welcome less conventional forms of argumentation and forensics scholarship. In addition to seeking “Research in Progress” submissions as part of the call for competitive papers, as well as traditional panel submissions, WFAA has added a third category of submissions being sought for the conference: forensics performances & position papers.

Interested scholars are encouraged to submit forensics performances or positions papers to WFAA for competitive selection. Forensics positions papers may address a wide-range of issues related to forensics, including forensics pedagogy and practice, examinations of forensics organizations and culture, and/or performance panels that highlight the intellectual richness of competitive forensics.

Submissions should not include information that identifies the authors/performers. Papers should not exceed 10 pages in length and performances should not exceed 10 minutes each.

Forensics performances & paper submissions must be submitted using the Attendee Interactive system accessible via www.westcomm.org no later than than midnight PST on Tuesday, September 1, 2020.

The Communication Theory and Research division (CTR) is headed in to 2021 with a fresh outlook and hoping to cultivate many different types of scholarship. As CTR moves into 2021 division planners are ever more interested in work that engages with the past and future of theory and research in the communication discipline. For the 2021 conference, the division is especially interested in work that exists at the nexus of communication theory and race/ethnicity/ identity. It is our hope that a division that has always been a big tent will become an even bigger one in 2021. In 2021, CTR aims to cultivate connections with other interest groups and is especially interested in work that could be co-sponsored with other interest groups. New and wonderful paths are being paved in CTR, and we welcome you to be a part.

By Michelle Holling, Interest Group Chair

Call for Papers: Communication, Identities, and Difference Interest Group

Western States Communication Association

2020 Convention Denver, CO

Submission Deadline: September 1, 2019 to Attendee Interactive

The Communication, Identities, and Difference (CID) Interest Group of WSCA invites competitive paper submissions and program proposals for the 2020 Annual Convention in Denver, Colorado. The theme for this year’s conference is “Communication, Agitation, and Justice.” Further information about the conference theme and the general Call for Papers can be found at https://www.westcomm.org/page/CFP2020 Submissions to the Communication, Identities, and Difference Interest Group should adhere to the guidelines listed below.

In particular, CID invites competitive paper and panel submissions that reflect the goals of the interest group namely, centralizing intersectional and historically marginalized identities regardless of theoretical or methodological approach and in discursive or nondiscursive realms, consult CID Bylaws and variously engage the conference theme of “Communication, Agitation, and Justice.” Encouraged are submissions that examine, engage, and/or critique topics such as, but not limited to, (mis)use(s) of violence in agitating and responses to it when seeking justice; communicative necessities (e.g., the role of civility, co-conspirators, or spatial relations) of agitation and justice; linkages amongst difference, justice, and hope(ful) futures; relationship between agitation, justice, and democracy; or exercise(s) of power at micro, meso, or macro levels when agitating and seeking justice. In accordance with the Bylaws of CID, one submission, paper or panel, per author/submitter is accepted.

Competitive Papers: In adherence of WSCA convention guidelines, competitive papers should (1) not have been submitted to any other interest group; (2) not have been presented at another conference or convention; (3) not have been published; or (4) not have been accepted for publication. Please follow the additional guidelines below when preparing a submission.

1) COMPETITIVE PAPERS must:

a) Be no longer than 30 pages (including figures, notes, references, etc.).

b) Include a 150-200 word abstract of the paper (directly beneath the paper’s title).

c) Be free of any and all identifying information to ensure a fair and anonymous peer review. In other words, ensure the author’s name(s) and any other identifying information is not listed on the paper’s first page, in headers or footers, in the document’s metadata, etc. Author names will be entered separately through Attendee Interactive.

d) Student Papers: If all authors of a competitive paper are or were a student at the time of submission to WSCA, the paper is considered a student submission and is eligible for recognition by CID. If this is the case, the competitive paper should be marked “STUDENT” in the upper-right hand corner of the title page. Please also indicate whether each author is a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral student. NOTE: ALL AUTHORS of a competitive paper must meet the eligibility requirement for student status in order for the paper to be eligible for award consideration.

e) Debut Papers: If all the authors of a competitive paper “have not presented a paper at a state, regional, national, or international convention, or published in any academic journal,” the paper is considered a debut submission and is eligible for recognition by CID and the WSCA Executive Club. If this is the case, the competitive paper should be marked “DEBUT” in the upper-right hand corner of the title page. Please also indicate whether each author is a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral student. NOTE: ALL AUTHORS of a competitive paper must meet the eligibility requirement for debut status in order for the paper to be eligible for award consideration.

f) Audio-visual equipment –It’s extremely limited and expensive. Therefore, be judicious in requesting technology only if essential for a successful presentation.

g) IRB approval – authors must disclose whether IRB approval was obtained. Please consult IRB approval

Program Proposals may consist of a chair, individual paper presenters, and a critic/respondent. As well, round-table discussions, performances, debates, or other unique formats are welcomed. In alternative program formats, respondents may be included or omitted as appropriate. Programs co-sponsored with other interest groups are also welcome. Submit a program proposal in one (1) single attachment that reflects the following information:

a) The thematic title of the program;

b) A 500 word rationale for the program as a whole;

c) Names, affiliations, and e-mail addresses of all participants;

d) If requesting panel co-sponsors, state all interest group sponsors and primary interest group to whom panel is submitted for review;

e) For paper panels, in addition to sub-points “a-c”, also provide title and brief description for each presentation (maximum 300 words);

f) An abstract of 50-75 words that identifies content and purpose of the panel, which would be printed in convention program if panel accepted;

g) Request for audio-visual technology, if necessary. Please note: audio-visual equipment is extremely limited and expensive. Therefore, be judicious in requesting technology only if essential for a successful presentation.

h) Submitters bear responsibility of entering all panelists’ information into Attendee Interactive.

PROCESS & DEADLINE: Competitive paper or program proposals must be submitted online through Attendee Interactive. NOTE: all Attendee Interactive usernames and passwords are separate from WSCA log-in information. All submissions should be in Microsoft Word or PDF format. Competitive Papers and Program Proposals must be received NO LATER THAN 11:59 PM on Sunday, September 1, 2019 to receive full consideration.

For questions or concerns about CID or its submission process, please contact the CID program planner, Michelle A. Holling, Ph.D., at HollingWSCA@csusm.edu

By Harry Archer, Interest Group Chair

The Communication Theory & Research (CTR) Interest Group of WSCA welcomes competitive paper submissions and program proposals for the 2020 Annual Convention in Denver, Colorado. The Communication Theory & Research Division is an excellent outlet for papers and programs that consider the intersections between theoretical and methodological perspectives, progressive applications of communication theories, and spotlights on the scholarship of distinguished communication theorists. Case studies that explore theoretical issues are strongly encouraged. For the 2020 convention, the Division is particularly interested in papers and programs that:

-Expand upon the convention theme, Communication, Agitation, and Justice;

-Draw from diverse theoretical and methodological backgrounds;

Submission Deadline: September 1, 2019

The Rhetoric, Culture, and Advocacy (RCA, formerly Rhetoric and Public Address) Interest Group invites submission of competitive papers and program proposals for the 2020 Western States Communication Association (WSCA) Convention.

This year’s conference theme “Communication, Agitation, and Justice,” is especially salient given ongoing discussions concerning diversity and inclusion across our discipline. We particularly seek papers from people of color, LGBTQ+ individuals, women, scholars with disabilities, and other historically marginalized and underrepresented groups whose perspectives can challenge, undermine, enrich, and expand current understandings of rhetorical studies, and that interrogate rhetoric’s role in constructing, circulating, and challenging relations of power.

Further information about the conference theme and the general Call for Papers can be found at http://www.westcomm.org/; however, submissions to the Rhetoric, Culture, and Advocacy Interest Group should adhere to the following guidelines:

COMPETITIVE PAPERS: Authors are invited to submit completed papers that relate to the theory, history, criticism, or production of rhetoric, publics, and public culture.

We seek paper submissions that speak to the conference theme from a diverse array of theoretical, methodological, or critical perspectives within rhetorical studies, including rhetoric and civic engagement, public address, critical/cultural studies, argument and advocacy, visual and material rhetoric, public memory, and rhetoric of identity and difference, among others.

Competitive paper submissions will be made electronically through Attendee Interactive. (details for making submissions will be available at www.westcomm.org/. Please follow these guidelines as you prepare your submission.

Competitive papers may not:

Have been presented at another conference or convention.

Have been published.

Have been accepted for publication.

Only one competitive paper submission per author is allowed.

ii) Include a 100-200 word abstract of the paper (directly beneath the paper’s title).

iii) Be free of any and all identifying information to ensure a fair and anonymous peer review. In other words, ensure the author’s name(s) and any other identifying information is not listed on the paper’s first page, in headers or footers, in the document’s metadata, etc. Author names will be entered separately through Attendee Interactive. See the RCA IG website at http://www.rhetoricwest.org for directions for ensuring anonymous review and the removal of identifying information.

In alternative program formats, respondents may be included or omitted as appropriate.

Given the conference theme, innovative program proposals that provide opportunities for collaboration with civic leaders and social justice advocates are encouraged, as well as those focused on the conference theme itself.

By Hillary Jones, Chair of Interest Group

2020 WSCA Media Studies Interest Group Call for Papers

The Media Studies Interest Group (MSIG) invites submissions to the 2020 Western States Communication Association annual conference, which will occur 21-24 February 2020 in Denver, Colorado. This year’s conference theme is “Communication, Agitation, and Justice.” You can learn more about the conference at: https://www.westcomm.org/page/Convention2020

The MSIG welcomes competitive papers, traditional paper panels, interactive and innovative panel sessions, and creative productions relating to communication and media studies. In keeping with this year’s conference theme, we invite work that explores the intersection of agitation and justice with media studies. We encourage a broad definition of justice, and we welcome work focusing on any medium, on media studies as a discipline, and/or on representations of these themes in artifacts.

Authors might examine (among many other possibilities):
- how a medium’s affordances and constraints enable, affect, or inhibit justice (e.g., algorithmic bias)
- agitation relating to media as an industry (e.g., net neutrality)
- how justice is defined and negotiated through and as media (e.g., “social justice warriors”)
- how groups and movements advocating for justice employ media to agitate (e.g., documentaries advocating for environmental justice, social justice movements launched or amplified by hashtags, the use of bodycam footage in the criminal justice system, or televisual imaginaries of more just ways of being)

Finally, MSIG invites work that helps to advance media literacy or the ability to agitate, including innovative panels and artistic productions.

Deadline for Submissions: September 1, 2019

By Leslie Harris, ORWAC President

The Organization for Research on Women and Communication invites submissions for program proposals and competitive papers for the Western States Communication Association Convention in Denver, CO (February 21-24, 2020). ORWAC seeks submissions that speak to both its emphasis on research regarding women, intersectionality, gender, and feminism, and the Convention theme, “Communication, Agitation, & Justice.” Of particular interest are papers and panels that challenge or extend understandings of feminist advocacy, address the building of critically conscious coalitions, and explore the complexity of racial and gender identities.

Paper submission guidelines: ORWAC does not accept works in progress nor should papers have been previously presented, published, or be accepted for presentation or publication. Authors who have not previously presented a paper at a conference or published in a journal should mark their papers as “Debut” in the upper right-hand corner of the title page as well as indicate their status (e.g., bachelor’s, master’s or doctoral student). Authors should also select “debut” in the Attendee Interactive system. All co-authors must meet the eligibly requirements to be considered a Debut Paper. ORWAC offers $500 awards to the Top Paper, Top Student Paper, and Top Debut Paper. All student submissions should be marked as “Student” for consideration of the Top Student Paper award.

Paper submissions should not exceed 25 pages and should be free of information identifying the author(s).

Authors must disclose whether they have obtained Institutional Review Board (IRB) approval, organizational approval, or other necessary permissions for any convention submission involving the collection of data on human participants. If no approval was obtained, the reason should be stated. For example, if authors have not obtained IRB approval because their institutions do not have IRBs, that fact should be stated. The IRB disclosure statement should be included in a footnote, author note, or submission text.

Program Panel submission guidelines: Include the following information: 1) Thematic title of the program; 2) Description and rationale of program; 3) Title and brief description of each presentation or questions to be pursued by panelists; 4) Names and affiliations of all participants. Alternative formats are encouraged as are innovative program proposals that provide opportunities for engaged interaction among participants and attendees.

All submission will be through the WSCA online system, Attendee Interactive. Please note that your Attendee Interactive user name and password are separate from your WSCA log-in information. Follow submission instructions on the website, and stipulate any requests for AV equipment with your initial submission. Requests for equipment submitted after the submission deadline will not be met.
