Undergraduate Scholars Research Conference

Dr. Justin P. Boren, WSCA Second Vice President, invites submissions to the 16th Annual Undergraduate Scholars' Research Conference (USRC) on Friday, February 22, 2019 in Seattle, Washington. Undergraduate students are invited to submit papers reporting original research (e.g., critical investigation, experimentation, or analysis leading to the discovery or creation of new facts; theories or interpretation, or significant revisions of already existing facts; or the practical applications of these new or revised conclusions). Diverse philosophical, theoretical and methodological approaches are welcome. For 2019, we are piloting a new program where undergraduate student can submit their short films (details below).

The USRC is an extraordinary opportunity for undergraduate scholars and researchers to showcase their scholarly and creative work and to receive feedback from experienced scholars in the field. Undergraduate students benefit from participating in the research conference by crafting and sharing a professional presentation, meeting other undergraduate scholars in the field, and learning about graduate studies in Communication. The conference concludes with an awards ceremony.

We especially encourage undergraduate students to submit papers that fit the theme of the convention: Advocating with Evidence. Student film submissions should fit this theme of the convention, broadly defined.

Submission Guidelines

Paper Submissions

All authors on the submitted papers must be undergraduate students at the time of submission and can not be  graduate students at the time of presentation. Students should not submit more than one paper for which they serve as the primary author. Coauthored papers are welcome but all coauthors must be undergraduate students.

Using the submission link on the WSCA website, follow the steps outlined. This includes uploading your work that includes the paper title, abstract, the paper itself, and references. Do not include your name or affiliation with your uploaded document to assure anonymous reviews. Your submission should be no more than 25 pages in length. All submissions should be in Adobe PDF format.

The deadline for submission is by 11:59 m Pacific Time on December 1, 2018. All authors will be notified of paper acceptances by January 9, 2019.

Short Film Submissions (New pilot program for 2019)

Undergraduate students are invited to submit a short film (less than 10 minutes in length, including all credits). The primary creator of the film must be an undergraduate student (a team of undergraduate students is also acceptable). A student can only be credited on one film submission to the conference. By submitting a film to the convention, the student(s) agrees to allow for the film to be presented to the general public at the conference.

Submit: In a single PDF document: 1) a listing of the name(s) and institution(s) of all undergraduate students credited on the film and their role(s); 2) the run time for the film; 3) a single paragraph indicating how the film connects to the conference theme of Advocating with Evidence; 4) a statement indicating that the submitter has express permission to show the film at the conference, and; 5) a private YouTube or Vimeo link (with a password, if required - please make sure that your password is useful through January 15, 2019) to distribute to reviewers. Submissions with broken links or passwords that are not usable will not be considered. Films will be judged on how well they connect to the convention theme and on their overall quality and aesthetics.

Using the submission link on the WSCA website, follow the steps outlined. This includes uploading an Adobe PDF document detailed above.

Conference Registration

For those students whose papers or films are accepted, WSCA will provide complimentary registration to the rest of the WSCA Convention. The registration fee for the USRC is $15 for each presenter.
