As many of you know, the Distinguished Service Award has long been regarded not only as a cherished secret in WSCA, but also the highest honor that the association can bestow on a member. The award honors persons who have made considerable and longstanding contributions both to WSCA and to the field of communication.
Last year at WSCA, I had the pleasure of having dinner with this year’s winner. It was my impression at that time, and one later confirmed by my colleagues, that this person is really difficult to read. If you have interacted with this person, you probably have laughed at jokes that weren’t meant to be jokes, and you probably have thought that some of this person’s jokes were serious comments. Maybe this is some kind of relationship maintenance strategy—I don’t really know….
This year’s winner has extensive service to the field of communication. For example, over the past 10 years, this person has served as an Editorial Board Member for 15(!) of our field’s leading journals—why anyone would want to review that many manuscripts calls into question this person’s judgement in my opinion because it certainly increases the risk of conflict….
Like previous winners of the award, this year’s winner has held multiple leadership positions within WSCA, including serving as the Editor of the Western Journal of Communication and President of WSCA. Now, I could stand here and talk about all of this person’s service to WSCA until the cows turn blue, but I won’t. Ah, shoot, I think I just mixed my metaphors!
This person was nominated for this award not primarily because of the many service positions this person has held, but rather but because of the manner in which they have undertaken that service. Specifically, the mentorship that this year’s winner has provided to others in WSCA has inspired them, in turn, to serve in leadership roles within the association and beyond. To quote the nominator directly, “[He gives] the full measure of himself to each and every role. He is truly someone who leads by example, who mentors others to follow in his footsteps, and ensures the ongoing health and vitality of this association we all love so deeply.”
The committee agrees, and we are pleased to present the WSCA Distinguished Service Award to Dan Canary.
