By Sharon Downey, Editor, Western Journal of Communication

Each year, the Western States Communication Association honors the outstanding article published in our journal, the Western Journal of Communication.  For 2015, the selection committee was composed of six Editorial Board members with very different specialties in our discipline.  Still, they were able to agree on one stand out article that appealed to all of their varying knowledge and interests.

Our award winning article fits easily into family communication, interpersonal communication, group communication, and conflict management; mass media studies, cultural studies, and queer studies; and rhetorical place, space, and temporal theories. With Kenneth Burke’s “equipment for living” and “symbolic medicine” added to the mix to integrate these diverse conceptual strands, what we end up with is a compelling analysis and commentary about a popular television series that seemed to fittingly transform our understanding of the contemporary American family, but really just again reified traditional family heteronormativity at the expense of fostering genuine gender inclusiveness.

I am delighted to announce that the B. Aubrey Fisher award for 2015 goes to the article “(Queer) Family Time: Brothers & Sisters and Managing Temporal Anxieties,” written by Colorado State University’s Thomas R. Dunn.
