This year’s WSCA speech and debate tournament hosted students from four states competing in both debate and individual speaking events. We had the privilege this year of being hosted by Danny Iberri-Shea and the San Diego State University speech and debate team.

The tournament offered two divisions of parliamentary debate competition. In the junior division, home town favorites Point Loma Nazarene University completed the impressive feat of ‘closing out’ the tournament at the semifinal level, meaning the top four junior debate teams were all from PLNU. In the open division of parliamentary debate, the elimination rounds culminated in a pair of semifinal debates between two schools with an over 100 year long debate rivalry, The University of Utah and The University of Nevada-Reno. The wolf pack prevailed in both of these debates, meaning that Nevada completed a final round closeout in open parliamentary debate.

The tournament also offered competition in 11 individual speaking events. Schools winning an individual speak event included: Grossmont College, Northwest College, Palomar College, San Diego Mesa College, and the University of Utah.

Finally, overall tournament sweepstakes were calculated for this year’s tournament to determine which schools had evidenced the most success across both the debate and speech portions of the tournament.

In the 2 year school division, the top school was Northwest College

In the 4 year division, the top competitive school was the University of Utah.

Finally, the overall combined sweepstakes champions for the 2016 WSCA speech and debate tournament, with almost twice as many points as the second place school, was the University of Utah.
