The Distinguished Teaching Award may be given each year to deserving faculty members who have made a significant contribution to the quality of teaching in WSCA and the communication field in institutions in the Western region. Recipients must demonstrate teaching that rises above and beyond the craft of teaching to a sustained performance of excellence in pedagogy. This kind of teaching incites intellectual curiosity in students, can inspire departmental colleagues, and makes students aware of significant relationships between the academy and the world at large.

The process for this award requires a letter of nomination be submitted to the award committee chair who, in turn, confirms the nominee’s eligibility and then requests all necessary documentation from the nominated faculty member.  The award committee reviews the nominees and makes the final decision.

This year’s letter of nomination author summed up the recipient best when she wrote that the nominee, “has dedicated her career to cultivating a learning environment that is simultaneously rigorous and enjoyable, challenging and inspiring, practical and empathetic.” And that the nominee, “truly embodies the spirit of the WSCA Distinguished Teacher Award.”

This year’s award recipient is San Diego State University’s Professor of Communication, Dr. Patricia Geist-Martin.
