It’s quite simple, really. WSCA. San Diego. Any questions? Blue skies and warm temperatures in addition to all the fun and intellectual stimulation that WSCA has to offer. WSCA will convene from Saturday, February 27th to Tuesday, March 1st, 2016 (including leap day!) at the Bahia (pronounced ba-HEE-ya) Resort Hotel. Make your plans now and be sure to get your papers, panels, performances, and GIFTS ready for the 1 September deadline.sandiego

The resort sits on a peninsula that juts out into Mission Bay. In the accompanying picture, the resorts takes up all of the land in the bottom-center (and there’s more to it on the left), Mission Bay is in the foreground, and the Pacific Ocean is in the background (i.e., top). That’s right.,..the convention will be held only a couple of blocks from Mission Beach and the Pacific Ocean! It is a site with all the resort amenities, but also the space and facilities that we need to hold or conference. This is most certainly a great venue for a memorable and intellectually stimulating conference.

There are many interesting and unique amenities available at the Bahia. For example, the resort has two sternwheeler boats that we will likely use for both program sessions and departmental receptions. The sternwheelers also take hourly evening trips around Mission Bay (including dance parties in the late evening). The Bahia has two lighted tennis courts, a fitness center, and lots of places to walk and/or run (both around the resort on Mission Bay, along the ocean on Mission Beach, in nearby parks, etc.). Near the hotel, guests will be able to rent kayaks, paddleboats, sailboats, powerboats, bicycles, take a Segway tour, and enjoy the resort’s beach from complimentary cabana. Near the Bahia is Belmont Park with the Giant Dipper Roller Coaster, Sea World (less than 2 miles away), Mission Beach Park, and so on and so on.

The Bahia is a facility where we can both work hard and play hard. In early May, Executive Director Heather Hundley, President-Elect and Primary Program Planner Mark Bergstrom, and I travelled to the Bahia. In our visit, Heather, Mark and I (or me or myself,...) visited all of the meeting rooms, restaurants and bars, and all of the types of hotel rooms the resort has to offer. There are many spaces, both indoors and out, that we can use. Some of the meeting rooms are very typical (if you’ve been in one convention hotel meeting room, you’ve been scores of them) and while others are unique (e.g., the boats). Last, but certainly not least, there are also many nearby bars and restaurants, particularly as you approach Mission Beach.

The last time WSCA was in San Diego, we set the all-time WSCA record for conference registrations (over 800 participants). We are planning on breaking that record in 2016. So start making your plans and creating your submissions now!
