As current WSCA Health Communication Interest Group Chair, I wanted to extend my congratulations to our top paper winners at this year’s conference in Denver, CO.

WSCA 2020 | Health Communication Interest Group Top Papers:

Top Overall Paper: "Empath(olog)ic Pedagogy: An Autoethnography of Health, Class, and the Classroom" (Brandi Lawless, University of San Francisco)

Top Debut Paper: “Using Health Belief Model to Understand Female Chinese International Students’ Perception of HPV Vaccine” (Xin Zhou, Arizona State University)

Top Student Paper: "What’s Bugging College Students? A Content Analysis of Meningitis B Vaccination Materials on University Websites" (Rebecca Leach & Lauren Martinez, Arizona State University)

We were very lucky to have such meaningful and high-quality scholarship presented at our conference this year. I would also like to remind scholars that our theme for next year’s WSCA is Cultivate and will be held in Irvine, CA from February 12th through the 15th.  Our formal call for papers will be send out in early April via WSCA News, at, but it is never too early to start brainstorming submission ideas. As a reminder, WSCA is great intellectual incubator for undergraduate and graduate student submissions. At our business meeting this year we created a new “Debut Paper Award” for our interest group that awards author(s) of a paper who have not presented at a state, regional, national or international convention, or published in an academic journal. We would like to encourage first-time attendees, often graduate and undergraduate students, to submit to our interest group.

We also promote interdisciplinary scholarship by hosting joint interest group panels with other disciplines represented across WSCA. If leading a joint panel might be of interest to you or if you have other questions about WSCA 2021 HCIG submissions, please contact me at

Finally, we are always in need of reviewers, respondents, and panel chairs. Please keep these service opportunities in mind if you plan on attending WSCA 2021. We appreciate your continued support of WSCA and the Health Communication Interest Group.
