Distinguished Service Award Speech

Presented to: Paul Mongeau

Presented by: Wendy Hine

It is my honor to present the 2020 Distinguished Service Award.  This year’s recipient joins the ranks of those previously honored, who demonstrated outstanding dedication to the field of communication, and service to the Western States Communication Association.  Would all former Distinguished Service Award recipients please stand.  As we can all see, these individuals represent some of the best, brightest, and most generous individuals in the field of Communication.

Last year, Derek Buescher, reminded all of us that service should be part of our lives as “academic citizens.”   Service paves the way for scholarship and teaching; as organizing, planning, reviewing and responding are essential functions that must occur in order for us to have a forum in which to share our ideas.  I would add that service has an unselfish quality; those who serve do not expect to receive benefits in return.  However, their service can have a profound effect on students, colleagues, and the field as a whole.

This year’s Distinguished Service Award winner has been characterized as someone who embodies the “work hard, play hard” mantra of WSCA.  This person has been a career long member of WSCA.  They began their service as a paper reader, conference panel chair, conference panel respondent, and an interest group secretary, vice chair and chair.  Then they served as local host of the annual conference.  Their commitment to WCSA continued, serving in the Legislative Assembly; and the Distinguished Service Award, Time and Place, Finance and Executive Committees.  This person then became First Vice President, President Elect and Immediate Past President of the organization.

This year’s winner was described as a “kind, courteous, critical, strong and engaged academic.”  This scholar has served on 20 Ph.D., 58 M.A. and 42 B.A. student committees; serving as a mentor on dissertations, comprehensive exams, theses, projects, and independent studies.  They always encouraged WSCA conference participation among students.  Serving as a role model, this person has presented 34 papers at WSCA conferences over the past 37 years.  They have made substantial contributions to the field with over 70 publications.  They have served as an editor or editorial board member of 9 different journals including the Western Journal of Communication.  Despite being such a recognized scholar in the field, former students remarked how generous this person was with their time, and how they put in extra work to explain the importance of service activities.

In summary, the nomination team for this individual stated “this remarkable man has taught all of us the values of hard work, commitment, and loyalty- all of which he has given to WSCA and the communication discipline throughout his career.”  Please join me in congratulating, Paul Mongeau, the 2020 WSCA Distinguished Service Award winner.
