The "Crossroads of the West" Welcomes WSCA
Katherine Adams, President

Early morning July 23, 1847 a small contingent of Mormon pioneers made camp on the grassy bank of a stream they named City Creek. Within hours they broke ground plowing 5 acres on the first day. The next day Brigham Young arrived with 147 pioneers and began planning for the Great Salt Lake City. 1700 pioneers survived the first winter and the rest is history. Salt Lake City now extends 22 miles east to west and 25 miles north to south. As the "Crossroads of the West" half of our country's population is located within a 2.5-hour flight from SLC. I could go on, however I do not want to steal the thunder of our Local Host Dennis Alexander. Needless to say Salt Lake City is rich in history and pioneer spirit, and welcomes an organization rich in its own history and pioneer spirit. Our convention this year is February 14-18, 2003.

President-Elect Connie Bullis, her team of program planners and our Executive Director Sue Pendell are busy organizing a convention program around the theme "Communicating for Sustainability" to highlight the bridge between the symbolic and material dimensions of our lives. This year we worked with one submission deadline for our workshop, program, and competitive program proposals. I hope this helped to streamline the process for all of us and the Executive Council encourages your feedback on this change.

Sara Hayden, our Second Vice President, has organized our first WSCA Graduate Workshop and Open House. Please encourage your early career graduate students and advance undergraduate students to attend this workshop on Saturday, February 15, 2003. Melanie Bloom is soliciting names for our Outstanding Service Award and Julie Benson-Rosston is soliciting schools for the Model Teaching Award. Particia Geist Martin, as chair or our Publications Committee, is also still looking for candidates for editor-elect of our Western Journal of Communication. Please, please help these individuals find people for consideration. And as always our Time and Place Committee chaired by Christie Beck are busy searching for future conference sites and are value your input.

Your Executive Council continues to explore and implement ways to serve its members; increase its membership base; improve the quality of our publications; improve our financial viability; increase the visibility of our association; and always to provide you with what is recognized as one of the best regional conferences in our discipline. I look forward to seeing you in February 2003.

WSCA 2003 Convention February 14-18, Salt Lake City "Communicating for Sustainability"
Connie Bullis, President-elect

Plan to come to Salt Lake City for Valentine's week in 2003 for the 74th annual WSCA convention. The convention will feature both WSCA's usual innovative programming as well as theme sessions on Communicating for Sustainability. Your convention planners from all of the interest groups are currently developing panel proposals for competitive panels as well as panels of particular contemporary interest. We will also offer programs that focus on how communication can facilitate and hamper sustainability.

A special workshop featuring Salt Lake City Community College's media center and its development is planned including a site visit. Several workshops focusing on such broad issues as couple communication, communication technology, and intercultural communication are scheduled for February 14. The convention preconference, organized by Jennifer Peeples and George Cheney will focus on Communicating for Sustainability. A special workshop session organized by Second Vice President Sara Hayden will be devoted to facilitating undergraduate and graduate students' questions and needs as they consider graduate school in general and particular programs in particular.

Each interest group will feature a number of stimulating panels throughout the convention. Some will focus on local contemporary issues such as the 2002 Winter Olympics and current legal cases related to free speech while others will focus on communication issues such and career development in community colleges.

We are pleased to announce that Lois Gibbs has agreed to join us as our keynote speaker. Lois Gibbs is well known as the layperson who brought Love Canal to the world's attention through her choice of communication strategies. She will share those experiences with us Sunday, February 15, 2003. The Tanner Humanities Center at the University of Utah will cosponsor her visit.

skisWe hope those of you attending the conference for the first time will attend the "Newcomers Reception" February 14 where the governing body and other WSCA members will be available to chat, welcome you, and provide answers to anything you may want to ask. Local host Dennis Alexander is planning a variety of local events from skiing to a visit to the Temple Square. He is also planning for the traditional sock hop and is collecting up-to-date information on the best pubs and restaurants in Salt Lake City. The Marriott Hotel is located in the heart of the city close to shopping, nightlife, and Temple Square. We look forward to seeing you in Salt Lake City February 14-18, 2003!

Memorial Fund To Support Student Travel Scholarships

The Legislative Assembly, at its March 4, 2002 meeting, approved the establishment of a WSCA Memorial Fund to serve as a repository for contributions made to the organization to honor individuals. Irwin Altman, Keynote Speaker of the 2001 WSCA Convention, donated the initial $1500. The WSCA Executive Club will donate further seed money for the Fund. Interest from the Fund will be used for student travel scholarships for the annual WSCA convention. Criteria for awarding scholarships will be recommended by a committee, appointed by the President, during the first five years of the Fund and approved by the Executive Council prior to the awarding of any scholarships.

worldThe Memorial Fund will be held in an appropriate investment vehicle, separate from other asset funds, and meet the investment criteria described in the Policy and Procedures Manual of WSCA under "Financial Policy."

The officers of WSCA encourage donations to the Fund as a productive way to commemorate the lives of WSCA members and others and to support those who are the future of our discipline and our Association.

Regional Journals Subscription Price to Increase

WSCA has been subsidizing regional journal subscription costs for its members for a number of years, and the subsidies have been coming out of Western's "savings account." To cover the cost of a regional journal subscription, the fee will increase to $56 for both regular and student members in 2003. By continuing or beginning your subscription to the regional journals, you will keep your personal library current, keep up with work being done in our field, and have a personal collection for ease of access.
