Long Beach 2002: Here We Come!!!!
Katherine Adams, WSCA President-Elect

Now is the time to reserve March 2-5 for the 2002 WSCA convention.

I have worked these last months with some of the best interest group program planners ever! I do not have the space to highlight all the exciting panels so let me point out a few. Top theorists in the spotlight this year are: Charles Berger, Wayne Beach, and Philip Tompkins. Health Communication, Media Studies, and the Organization for Research on Women and Communication have created programs involving individuals from the local community in politics, medicine, business, and the arts. "Day at the Oscars" for instance, will involve critical reviews of 2002's nominated films and a discussion with Los Angeles Times TV/Media critic Howard Rosenberg. Other panels that reflect our theme include: "Images of 'Liberation' Constrained by Masculinity: Critical Analysis of Prime Time Television's Mobsters, Queers, and Witches," "Camera Shy: Creation and Constraints of Videotaping our Student's Speeches," "Lessons from the Celluloid Classroom: Constraining and Liberating Images of Education, Teachers, Students, and Classroom Communication," "Bahktin in the Discipline: Freedoms and Constraints," "Communication Creates, Constrains and Liberates Emotions," "Intercultural Communication Theory Creates, Constrains, and Liberates: Intercultural Communication Theory for a New Millennium," and "Communication Constrains: Examples from Applied Organizational Contexts." We have programmed almost 150 panels representing the talent and scholarship of this discipline, including two that critically focus on the events of September 11.

Saturday is our workshop and Basic Course PreConference day. Two workshops will provide learning opportunities for the K-12 educators: one in communication and education and another in communication and instruction. Other workshops focus on argumentation, technology, professional life, and service learning. The Basic Course PreConference directed by Robert Powell is constructed around critical issues in the basic course that reflect the conference theme.

Our local hosts, Mary McPherson and Sharon Downey, along with others from CSU, Long Beach have made a concerted effort to "wow" you. The Westin sits facing the Queensway Bay and is in easy access to all sorts of entertainment and restaurants that will fit any budget. I urge you to stay in the hotel to enjoy the convention facilities and financially support our organization. A live band will host the Sock Hop, for the first time. Come ready to dance your "dogs" off! Our keynote speaker will be Ms. Judy Shepard, who refers to herself as a "reluctant activist" and has become an outspoken educator on fighting hate crime.

When you run into my two assistants, Sabrina Ballard and Mike Martinez, please thank them for all their hard work and keeping me sane. We so look forward to seeing you March 2-5, 2002. I wish safe travel to all of you.

Invitation to the 2002 WSCA Convention
Sandra Petronio, WSCA President

We are excited to join our local hosts, Mary McPherson and Sharon Downey, in Long Beach for this year's WSCA convention. Kathy Adams has planned a terrific convention for all of us!

At this time, I would like to take a moment to give a special thanks to Sue Pendell who has been working on our behalf as the new Executive Director for WSCA. She has embraced the duties of the Executive Director with vigor and has already made a significant contribution to the well-being of our association. Welcome aboard, Sue. We also extend a thanks to Stephanie Coopman, the new Web/Newsletter Editor, for her part in developing the website and providing leadership as our communication expert.

We are fortunate to have such a deep and ready supply of dedicated WSCA members. As you attend the convention, please know that your participation in the business of WSCA is very important and heartily encouraged. You make a difference in this association and we can congratulate each other for jobs well done. So, please consider running for offices in WSCA. Your commitment keeps the Association alive and helps move it into this new century.

Please also encourage your students to attend. We need to have new ideas and different viewpoints represented and our students help make that possible.

Don't forget to pre-register! Doing so saves money and time when you get to the convention. I would also like to take this opportunity to ask you, on behalf of WSCA, for your support and help in registering at the convention hotel. Each year we lose significant money if members chose to stay elsewhere. So, take advantage of the good rates and stay at the convention hotel.

I invite you to attend the convention luncheon on Monday, March 4, 2002 to witness the awards and the President's address on: "The New World and Scholarship Practices: Necessary Changes in Defining Evidence." You are all cordially invited to the President's Reception on Monday night after the Legislative Assembly. Also, please come to the Kick-Off Program and No Host Reception on Saturday night. Don't forget the most anticipated Sock Hop on Sunday night of the convention. See you there!

Remember, the motto of WSCA is "work hard, play hard." Keep this in mind as you look forward to attending the Long Beach WSCA conference this March, 2002.

Fun in the Sun: Long Beach 2002
Mary McPherson, Local Host Coordinator

My colleagues and I at CSU, Long Beach invite you to our city for the 2002 WSCA convention. Long Beach offers miles of sandy beaches and a climate that is perfect for biking, jogging, and skating. You can spend the day at a museum, such as the Museum of Latin American Art, and enjoy an evening of blues and jazz on the Promenade. Visit The East Village, Belmont Shores, and Pine Street for shopping and a variety of dining experiences. Explore the famous Queen Mary and the Long Beach Aquarium of the Pacific. Disneyland, Universal Studios, Hollywood, and many other attractions are only a short drive away. On Saturday morning, Heather Hundley will host a golf tournament at the Green River Gold Club. Sunday, you can admire the spectacular artwork at the world famous Getty Museum. This is a museum trip you should not miss! Enjoy a relaxing sunset aboard our chartered yacht for the Monday evening dinner cruise. This cruise offers a wonderful dinner and incredible views. If you are interested in exploring the city on your own, we will provide you with information about popular local attractions such as Disneyland, local museum and theater schedules, skate and bike rentals, gondola cruises, and more. If you are planning to host a party/reception, please contact me at mary_mcpherson@hotmail.com.

Stay at the Wonderful Westin Long Beach!
Sue Pendell, Executive Director

If you're a member, you've already received your convention packet in the mail, including hotel reservation information for The Westin Long Beach. Reservations are due February 8, so if you haven't returned the form, you'll want to do so now. Convention and hotel information also are available on our website, www.westcomm.org.

The Westin Long Beach is conveniently located within a short walking distance of many excellent restaurants and two great used bookstores. You can catch The Passport shuttle bus right in front of the hotel, and, for free, it takes you to Shoreline Village for shopping, the Aquarium of the Pacific for entertainment, and the Queen Mary for food and fun. For a small fee, The Passport takes you to the Long Beach Art Museum, CSU Long Beach, several shopping centers, and lots more places to eat.

The Westin Long Beach has lovely sleeping rooms and convention-friendly meeting space. Pay a virtual visit to the Westin at www.vt360.com/westinlongbeach.

Staying in the convention hotel puts you close to the meetings, special events, parties, and the "Beach Bash" Sock Hop. The Westin is reasonably priced—$135 (plus tax) for up to four people.

Finally, staying in the convention hotel keeps your convention registration fee down because it helps "pay" for the meeting rooms. WSCA promises the hotel a certain number of sleeping rooms sold in exchange for free meeting rooms. If we don't fill those sleeping rooms, we have to pay for them, and if we have to pay for them this year, registration fees go up next year.

So stay at the Westin Long Beach!!

2003 Annual Convention, Salt Lake City, Utah
February 14-18, 2003
"Communicating for Sustainability"
Connie Bullis, WSCA First Vice-President

WSCA announces the theme, location, and dates for its annual convention. We will meet February 14-18, 2003 at the Marriott Hotel in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The conference theme will focus on the many ways in which communication can facilitate and inhibit the transition to global sustainability. Sustainable practices, relationships, communities, campuses, institutions, systems, etc. are all related to global sustainability. Papers, workshops, and program proposals that contribute to this theme are encouraged.

Plan to share Valentine's Day with your 800 or so WSCA Valentines! WSCA was last in Salt Lake City in1987. Many things have changed and some have remained the same. The Olympics has encouraged a great deal of cosmopolitan development—shops, brew pubs, night life, wonderful eateries, and much more. The hotel is within easy distance of the brand new Gateway project, city center, and the arts complexes. What has not changed is the "greatest snow on earth" and its easy access by public transit. Plans are under way to have good intellectual exchanges and lots of fun. Many Olympic venues (skiing, bobsled, luge, cross country) are open to the public. Cultural and sports events are near at hand and several will have special WSCA seating.

The University of Utah's Department of Communication and Salt Lake City are ready to show you what great hosts we have become!!
