The Environmental Communication Interest Group of Western States Communication Association is calling for competitive papers and program proposals. Submissions that relate to the conference theme are especially welcome. From research addressing Bateson’s ecology of mind to pedagogy that incorporates mindful meditations, environmental communication scholarship offers valuable opportunities to explore the conference theme, “Mindfulness and Communication.” This theme invites participants to further reflect on, expand upon, and challenge the role of communication in our multifaceted engagements with the world. For a full description of the conference theme, see: http://www.westcomm.org/page/CFP2018.

The following types of submissions are welcome.

Competitive Papers may utilize any accepted theoretical framework, methodology, form of critique, or extend the discipline’s understanding through literature reviews, theoretical articulations, and other forms of critical engagement. Student-authored papers are especially encouraged. Papers should not have been presented previously at a conference, be accepted for or published at the time of submission, or submitted to another interest group.

Submitted papers should include:

(1) A title page that includes the paper’s title; names, affiliation(s), email address(es), and phone number(s) of all authors; and audio-visual requests.*

(2) On a separate page, include a 100-200-word abstract of the paper (with the paper’s title appearing above the abstract).

(3) A maximum of 30 pages of text (excluding the title page and abstract); and

(4) No information in the paper that identifies the author(s) beyond that which appears on the title page (i.e., prepare for blind review).

(5) If applicable: Debut and student papers should be clearly marked.

Program Proposals should focus on a unifying theme relevant to research, theory, or instruction in environmental communication. Programs may consist of a chair, individual presenters, and a critic/respondent in a traditional panel format. However, roundtable discussions, performance activities, or other unique formats are encouraged. Innovative program proposals, especially those that provide opportunities for interaction among participants and attendees or that are co-sponsored with other interest groups, are also welcome and encouraged.

Program proposals should not exceed 1500 words (excluding names and addresses), and must contain the following: (1) Thematic title of the program; (2) Names, e-mail addresses, phone numbers, and affiliations of all participants; (3) A brief rationale for the program; (4) titles and brief descriptions of each presentation or program segment; (5) Equipment needed for the program.*

Workshops and Alternative Session Formats are also welcome. If you are interested in organizing a pre-conference workshop, performance, or other alternative format, which may be submitted as a program proposal (see above), please contact Brian Cozen at wscaec@gmail.com.

Film Screenings: The ECIG has a tradition of hosting a film screening and discussion session. Films with intellectual-educational value, an environmental communication theme or subject, and appeal to members of our own and other interest groups will be considered. Films may be of any genre or type; international, limited distribution, and self- or student-produced films are encouraged for submission. Proposals should be submitted as a workshop session. Include the following in the proposal: brief description of the film; rationale for inclusion that addresses relevance to environmental communication and conference theme; plan for workshop/discussion. Only proposals that include cost of screening fee or assurance of screening agreement will be considered. Please contact Brian Cozen at wscaec@gmail.com if you are considering a film screening proposal.

* = Equipment availability is extremely limited and very expensive. Unfortunately, it cannot be guaranteed. Please specify what your audiovisual will be used for. See the WSCA policy on Audio-Visual Equipment at Conventions in the Policies and Procedures Manual on the website http://www.westcomm.org/.

All submissions must be received before midnight Friday, September 1, 2017. Attach the submission (title page and separate text) as .pdf or .doc files to an email addressed to: wscaec@gmail.com.
