The Community College Interest Group (CCIG) invites submissions of thematic panels, roundtables and G.I.F.T.S. for programming at the 2018 WSCA Convention, being held in Santa Clara, California. We encourage submissions that have an impact on the 2018 Convention theme Mindfulness and Communication. Regarding the theme, our WSCA President-Elect and Primary Program Planner, Brian Heisterkamp, stated:

“The 2018 WSCA conference theme ‘Mindfulness and Communication’ asks participants to think in new ways about how present-moment awareness, non-judgment, and other mindfulness concepts including trust, attunement, patience, and acceptance influence and interact with their area of communication scholarship.

This convention theme is dedicated to presenting diverse, multi-methodological and interdisciplinary theory and research on mindfulness. Navigating the diverse pathways of mindfulness practice with an understanding of their consequences for intercultural, interpersonal, family, health, organizational, political, rhetorical, media, and other methods and interest areas of communication provides a focus for the 2018 convention theme: ‘Mindfulness and Communication.’ Conference attendees are invited to interpret the theme broadly, while focusing on the many ways that mindfulness may influence scholarship and teaching.

All participants should send their best work to WSCA’s annual convention to be held February 16-19 at the Hyatt in Santa Clara, California.”

Given the current climate, and the close link that Community Colleges have with their students and our communities at-large, the Community College Interest Group is an excellent venue to address the theme of Mindfulness and Communication set forth for this conference via panels and roundtables. Of course, a linkage to the theme is also welcome in any G.I.F.T.S. presentation, however, it is not required.

Program Proposals: Thematic Panels and Roundtable Discussions

Thematic panels should focus on a unifying theme relevant to the membership of the Community College Interest Group, and ideally pertinent to the 2018 theme. These panels might consist of a chair and individual presenters, and possibly a respondent. Individual presenters might have a short paper or scholarly position they are summarizing. Co-sponsorship with other interest groups is strongly encouraged. Individuals or panels who have a sound idea, and want to flesh it out for submission may want to contact the planner and CCIG Chair April Hebert via her email address april.hebert@csn.edu or the CCIG Gmail account at: CCIG.WSCA@GMAIL.COM

These panels should include the following information:

· Thematic title of the panel and brief abstract of the overall panel focus

· Names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and affiliations for ALL participants

· Defined roles of all participants (i.e. chair, presenter, respondent)

· Title and brief description of each participant’s contribution

· Equipment needed for the panel (NOTE that equipment availability is extremely limited. Refer to the WSCA Policy on Use of Audio-Visual Equipment at Conventions)

· The above information should be emailed as a WORD (.DOC or .DOCX), .PDF or .RTF attachment, to April Hebert before 5pm on Friday, September 1, 2018 via the CCIG Gmail account at CCIG.WSCA@GMAIL.COM

Roundtables are designed to create a dialogue between participants and the audience. These panels should be on a relevant topic to the Community College Interest Group, and ideally be pertinent to the 2018 theme. To present a robust discussion, participants of a roundtable will ideally have a diversity of ideas surrounding the topic being discussed. Those with roundtable ideas needing assistance building a group of panelists should contact CCIG chair April Hebert at april.hebert@csn.edu or at the CCIG email address: CCIG.WSCA@GMAIL.COM for resources on locating possible roundtable participants, if you do not have people you might already want to work with.

These panels should include the following information:

· Thematic title of the roundtable

· Names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses and affiliations for ALL participants

· Defined roles of all participants (i.e. chair, presenters)

· Brief description and rationale of the roundtable

· Equipment needed for the panel (NOTE that equipment availability is extremely limited. Refer to the WSCA Policy on Use of Audio-Visual Equipment at Conventions)

· The above information should be emailed as a WORD (.DOC or .DOCX), .PDF, or .RTF attachment, to April Hebert before 5pm on Friday, September 1, 2018 via the CCIG Gmail account at CCIG.WSCA@GMAIL.COM

G.I.F.T.S. Proposals

G.I.F.T.S. proposals should provide insightful and innovative techniques for teaching students in the communication classroom. Individuals who have a sound idea, and want to flesh it out for submission are encouraged to contact the planner and CCIG Vice Chair Linda Cooley at linda.cooley@reedleycollege.edu or the GIFTS Gmail account at WSCA.GIFTS@GMAIL.COM.
