We are pleased to have two award recipients this year who model communication programs within their institutions.
Our program award winner at the high school level is East High School. Two things set East High apart from their competition. First, we as a committee were especially impressed by the way East High integrates public speaking into their entire curriculum. Public speaking isn’t seen as an isolated skill to be used in one course alone, but rather a life skill that can enhance multiple aspects of life. Second, we were impressed by the way East High truly understood and approached writing as a communication process – something that from my experience is quite uncommon at the high school level.
Our program award winner at the university level is Salt Lake City College. Again, two things set SLLC apart from their competition. First, we as a committee were especially impressed by SLCC’s in-depth and continued support of transfer students during their transition to 4-year universities in the immediate area and beyond. Second, we were impressed by their media program and equipment, which was characterized to us by others as “robust” and nothing short of “state-of-the-art.” SLCC’s media program has gone a long way toward preparing those transfer students for success, whether they choose to pursue an advanced degree or enter directly into the workforce.
As you can see, we have two excellent and well-deserving winners this year, and I’d personally like to thank them for the positive impact they’re having on their students, as well as the positive ripple effect they’re having on the larger Communication discipline.
