The criteria for the Model Communication Program Award state that the program should:
· Reflect the breadth and/or depth of the communication discipline
· Have teaching personnel with specialized training in communication
· Integrate curricular and co-curricular activities
· Have strong administrative support
· Relate to the mission of the particular institution
Based on these criteria and the strength of the submissions received this year two outstanding programs were selected for this year’s award.
College of the Canyons, Santa Clarita, CA
In reviewing submissions for this award one committee member stated, “Their application reads like a survival tale of courage and grit from a woman who has had to claw her program to the success that it now enjoys, which says Model Communication Program.” Victoria Leonard, Chair of Communication Studies, College of the Canyons accepted the award for their program.
Irvine Valley College, Irvine, CA
The application materials from Irvine Valley College were equally impressive. In addition to their award winning Forensics program their department has pioneered innovative pedagogy to improve critical thinking in the basic course, which has been adopted by other campuses, which also says Model Communication Program. Gary Rybold, Chair of the Department of Communication Studies, accepted the award for Irvine Valley College.
Faculty from the two award-winning programs were featured on a panel where they discussed what they have done and how others might benefit from similar activities. The panel was very well attended, standing room only! Congratulations to these award-winning programs.
