deductible as charitable contributions. Dues paid to WSCA may be tax deductible as
ordinary and necessary business expenses. (IRS compliance statement.)
Life Membership in WSCA
Become a WSCA Life Member! The Legislative Assembly created
the Life Membership category to help build our assets to strengthen the Association in the
years to come. This is your opportunity to help WSCA and share in its mission of making
the communication discipline accessible to many people.
Life membership includes annual WSCA membership renewal and conference
registration for life. In addition:
- You will receive annual recognition in the program.
- You may purchase the other regional journals at the regular member's fee.
- You may purchase convention meals at the regular member's fee.
- Your contribution to the Association is partially tax deductible.
The basic contribution is $1,000. However, to ease the way for many to
participate, the Legislative Assembly set a schedule of deferred giving. You may select a
plan that best fits you on a one year to five-year scale. The life membership dues will increase to $2,000 starting October 1, 2010.

In designing the fund the Legislative Assembly specified that no more than 85%
of the interest earned shall be used to provide member benefits. This statement assures
two things: one, the fund will continue to grow and increase in value; and two, the member
benefits never come from the principal. Given that membership benefits do not come from
the principal amount, we think the donation is partially tax deductible as a charitable
contribution. The association uses the guideline of 80% charitable and 20% of member
benefit.
Because WSCA is a 501 (c) 3 organization, contributions or gifts may be
tax deductible as charitable contributions. Dues paid to WSCA may be tax deductible as
ordinary and necessary business expenses. (IRS compliance statement.) At the end of each
year in which you make a contribution, WSCA will send you a statement of the 80% tax
deductibility.
